Background of the study
Small-scale fisheries play a crucial role in sustaining the local economy of Ilaje Local Government Area by providing food security, income, and employment. The sector, predominantly managed by local communities, has evolved as a response to both traditional practices and contemporary economic pressures. Its significance is underscored by its ability to stimulate local trade and support ancillary services (Adebayo, 2023). However, environmental challenges such as overfishing and resource depletion, coupled with inadequate infrastructural support, have raised concerns about its long-term sustainability. Recent studies advocate for sustainable practices and community-based management as essential measures to maintain fish stocks and ensure economic continuity (Ola, 2024). Additionally, the economic resilience demonstrated by small-scale fisheries offers a model for rural development and poverty alleviation (Folarin, 2025). This study aims to capture the multifaceted impact of small-scale fisheries on the regional economy, assessing both the benefits and the challenges inherent in their operation.

Statement of the problem
Small-scale fisheries in Ilaje are confronted by challenges including overexploitation, inadequate technological support, and insufficient regulatory oversight. These issues not only threaten the sustainability of fish stocks but also undermine the sector’s contribution to local economic stability and job creation. The absence of effective management strategies further exacerbates these problems, calling for an in-depth evaluation to develop sustainable interventions (Adebayo, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the contribution of small-scale fisheries to local economic development.

  2. To identify operational challenges affecting sustainability.

  3. To recommend sustainable management practices and policy interventions.

Research questions:

  1. What economic contributions do small-scale fisheries make to Ilaje?

  2. What are the main challenges to sustainable fishing in the area?

  3. How can policy interventions enhance the sustainability of small-scale fisheries?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Small-scale fisheries significantly boost local economic activity.

  2. Inadequate regulation hinders sustainable fisheries practices.

  3. Sustainable management practices will improve the economic benefits.

Significance of the study
The study provides policymakers with critical data on how small-scale fisheries contribute to local economic resilience. By identifying challenges and recommending sustainable practices, it supports community development and resource conservation, ensuring long-term economic stability in Ilaje.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the impact of small-scale fisheries on local economies in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Small-Scale Fisheries: Locally operated fishing activities using traditional methods.

  2. Local Economies: The economic activities within a specific community.

  3. Sustainability: The ability to maintain resource use without depleting them.
